Mikel Welch, our Set Designer gave a few tips to spruce up your home without breaking the bank.
Mikel, I just saw your makeover on the show and I just wanted to comment and let you know. You definitely have it going on. I’m heading over to your facebook page now and question? Didn’t I see you on a decorating makeover show like HGTV. Anywho if you weren’t already blown up, you are about to be! Peace!
I absolutely love your creativity and color usage. I’m in the process of decorating the inside of one of my bathrooms drawers with fabric inside. Can you please remind me….I know you used fabric batting and a glue gun, but did you have cardboard or something also, under the batting? Thanks for the information. Congratulations on your success. Enjoy.
Loved your ideas! You should have your own segment on the show
thank you for your great ideas Mr. Welch
the room looks very relaxing was that your aim for Mr. Harvey since he has to focus before going out on stage? Mr. Welch I have also found some facinating deals for instance a 3000 dollar bathroom vanity for 350.00 from BOMBAY (going out of business sale plus the granit top was broken) a 1300 dollar leather couch for 500 with a bonus of a free one cause the first one they sent had a defect and the warehouse went out of business that week so I had to keep the defected one(just an inch of a cut on it which can be fixed with a leather uholstery kit. Purchased cabinets ( kitchen) Merlot that were 300 a piece for 50 dollars each got 10 of them. I built my own ottoman, kitchen Island (small) layed my own flooring and about to design my own bathroom lighting. I am addicted to decorating but would love a tip from you which is do you think having a leather wall in the bedroom is cheezy? I made a faux leather wall in my foyer its beautiful but should it remain in just the foyer?
just saw this segment this week and its August, I feel like a late bird but, Loved the room Mikel.
Loved this segment. The young fellow had a lot if energy and great ideas. Would love to see a regular segment like this. Can’t wait to do my hubby’s office.
the room was pretty, but it does not have energy.
Great Job, happy to see your face.
Hello Michael, today I watched a Steve Harvey show and u gave us tips on designing Steve’s office space. U gave a tip on buying paint to refurbish a table and u mentioned asking a sales person if they have mis tint for sale. Well my husband and I needed paint for our shutters and a specialist helped us before I could ask she brought it to us and it was only $5 for the top of the line paint, can I say hooray! And it was the color we needed. Great tip! Thank u Steve for having on the show.
Things from nature
Hey Mikel! I have a question for you. I live in an apartment and I would love to paint over the horrible cheap beige paint. I asked management if I could, they told me, “yes, as long as the paint-over isn’t really dark or ‘loud’. Do you have any suggestions?
Watching the drapery session, it brought back memories of what we did when stationed on Guam. Instead of wasting money on fancy curtains because of the floor to ceiling louvered windows, we bought twin bed top sheets from the BX. They already had a “pocket” to slip a basic rod through. Also, in one of my homes, I saw cloth shower curtains (white with cutout flowers) on sale; I used them in my livingroom (Four windows for $20 total); weaved them on the curtain rods.
Can you please show the floor plan? I would like to see how you arranged everything! It is beautiful!
hi! I love what you did on Steve Harvey Show! Do you need more work come on to my house I really could use some help I’m still back in line 80′s I’m trying to get up to the Millennium!
Marty, Hawthorne, California.
Good afternoon Mikel, I would like to know how you can “help” us make our bedroom more romantic looking and functionable. We are in our mid 50′s. We are sending are youngest off to college and we need the romance back in our bedroom. The room is very dark and cluttered we can barely move around. Please help! email@example.com or (424)200-8092.
Mikel, I need to make a headboard or some type of draped fabric from the ceiling for my room. Any ideas?
I love the piece you reinvented for Mr.Harvey’s office. I have an idea for a large wall in my dining rom. I already found a piece in a consignment shop that is currently an ugly duckling that will shortly blossom into a swan thanks to your inspiration. It’s a buffet that will be painted satin black, get new drawer pulls & the top wil be covered in faux croc upholstery fabric with some small nickel nails. thank you Mikel!
You gave a website where pictures can be printed could you please give the site again?
I am looking for a step by step on how to do the fabric cover drawer bottoms.
I LOVE what you did!
Thanks! First, purchase a foam poster board from an Art Supplies store and cut it down to the size of your drawer using an exacto knife. Next take your fabric and wrap it around the foam poster board. Use a hot glue gun to adhere the fabric to the foam poster board. Hope this helps!
I love the ideas
I like Steve office.
What color was the wall painted? Where did you find the faux fabric, and what color was it?
Thanks! Amherst Grey by Benjamin Moore; The fabric is from Active Foam Products in Chicago. It’s a black faux crock vinyl.
Thank you. I would like more ideals for the home. Perhaps a book soon.
You did a great job Mike!
Where do you get the hardware for the cornice boards? I love that idea!
Thanks! I got it all at Home Depot.
Mikel! I truly apologize for misspelling your name!!
Fantastic job Mikel! I really loved your segment on the show. Do you do any consulting? I would really like to give my home a makeover.
Thanks for the kind words. Sure, you an reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I look forward to hearing from you!
Mikel ~ I would like to know where I could get the scale. I am a libra and would love to put that in my office.
Hey TaMara, I got that from ZGallerie. I purchased the piece back in August, but I believe they still carry this item.
Bravo!! Well done office! Very good taste! You gave me an idea for a small buffet in my condo dining room that is reasonably priced. I have a hutch, but have limited space with a large dining table. Thanks much! Suzanne Vestuto, Oak Park
Glad I could help! You have some great vintage/thrift store in Oak Park!
Great job, Mikel! I’m not really a fan of much color in a space, so I love the earthiness of Mr. Harvey’s dressing room.
This is good stuff. I agree it should be a series
This is great information there should be a series of these tidbits for people like myself who love to make their establishments look good but don’t want to stimulate the economy too much? Hemming curtains that is a great idea!
I liked all of the ideas, but absolutely LOVED the refinished table with the self made drawer linings!! That will be the idea I use at home. Thanks Mikel
I loved his ideas for re-vamping old/inexpensive books and making them look expensive.
There were many ideas I liked. Awesome ideas with cornice, mixing patterns and colors. And the reuse/redesign of existing pieces great idea!
I was impressed with a lot of ideas. I like the drapes and how to create the cornice board with unique material. Use a vintage trunk instead of a coffee table. Mix patterns and colors. And take existing pieces in the home and refinish them to match your personality.
Mikel… I love your work; but what about color balanced decorations? I see lots of bland dark colors in homes and offices these days.
Thank Latisha! It’s honestly a matter of preference. I think bright white walls can become very interesting if you had some strong punches of color in art work and accessories. So, if your a fan of color…go bold!
Mikel, what flooring did you use in Steve’s dressing room?
I will have to get back to you on this one for the exact brand. It was a darker hard wood that was close to an expresso finish and the wood had a slight weathered texture.
Mikel- I was hoping for a picture of Steve Harvey’s office. My son who lives in a similar shaped apartment in NYC needs ideas on how to decorate on the cheap! Please post the office picture!
Thank you! Pat N.
